Micah

I would give Andy the world, if I could.

I stood there, watching Andy with his boss, my body humming from the realization that this was something I could give him.

While another part of me realized this was the beginning of the end.

A lot of humans discovered vampires in their twenties. Usually it was through a friend of a friend. One human taking another human’s hand and leading them into the world of vampires.

We were exotic. We were a forbidden secret that the rest of the world wouldn’t understand. We fueled fantasies and gave humans orgasms like no one else could. We were an escape from regular life and a walk on the wild side.

But only for a short time.

Because certain things were inevitable.

Sometimes it started with a promotion. Other times it was simply growing up and getting more responsibilities. A lot of times, they fell in love and got engaged.

Like Andy.

My chest ached as I remembered the night Andy told me he was engaged to Asshole Tim. I knew what was coming. Even if Tim had wanted a non-monogamous marriage, experience told me what would happen next. Andy and Tim lived in another city. Weekends that Andy might have spent seeing me would be taken up doing things with his husband instead. Then they would buy a house. Talk about kids.

Getting time to come see me would get harder and harder. Visits would become few and far between. And then one night Andy would sit down with me and break the news that he wasn’t going to see me anymore. Or I would simply stop hearing from him.

It had happened to me more than once, with other humans. It’s why I was supposed to keep things casual.

But with Andy, that was hard. I wanted him, like I’d wanted no other human in a long damn time. His body fit in my arms perfectly, his blood fed me like no other, and the earnest, wonderful Andy-ness of his personality warmed my heart and nestled in my chest.

His engagement to Asshole Tim had felt like a vise closing around me. The breakup had let me breathe.

To be honest, though, I never understood why he was with Tim. They didn’t seem to have a lot in common.

It was clear to me that Tim was seethingly jealous of Nicola, and for good reason. Andy was in love with his boss. That was apparent every time he talked more than a minute about Nicola. And after tonight, it was obvious that Nicola was in love with Andy too. I had no idea why they weren’t seeing each other.

I didn’t know why Andy had chosen tonight to finally wear the collar I’d given him. It meant a lot to me. It warmed my chest, even as it filled me with aching and longing, because it was too late.

Tonight was the beginning of the end. The whole engagement and breakup with Tim had simply delayed the inevitable.

One night Andy would leave me.

I wanted to give him the world.
